Customers interested in making regular monthly payments for their own budgeting purposes are always encouraged to do so.  Just remember when submitting payment, include your service (street) address in the memo line, and send it in before the water bill is even generated.  This method of paying in advance of receiving the bill not only cuts down on any late fees, but also will help you keep your account caught up!

Sewer Rates Increased September 1, 2009

The last sewer rate increase was on July 1, 2007. With a $1.7 million upgrade scheduled about to begin, we had to raise rates. While we were very fortunate to receive a grant/loan combination from USDA Rural Development, the City Commission had no choice but to approve a sewer rate increase with the new fiscal year budget. The City of Grant operates the water and sewer facilities under strict financial requirements (GASB-34), which require us to charge enough in fees to cover the cost of depreciation. Frequently Asked Questions about Water/Sewer Utility Bills

When is my Water Meter Read?
Currently, meters are read once each quarter, or four times a year. We are looking into making the switch to monthly billing, but no decisions have been made. Our meter readers now use state-of-the art electronic readers to ensure accuracy. Why is My Bill So High? Often, when Grant City residents receive their bills, they wonder why it is so high. Residents are billed once each quarter for water and sewer usage. One thing to keep in mind is that the bill reflects usage for the previous three months. In other words, a bill received in the fall will have summer usage on it. By this time, we find that many residents forget how frequently they may have watered over the summer, and are occasionally shocked at their bill. One of the biggest sources of high water bills is the use of an irrigation system. An average sprinkler head can use two gallons per minute. If your system has 20 heads, and runs for 20 minutes each day, the result would be 24,000 gallons in a month or 72,000 gallons during a quarterly bill. Purchasing a moisture sensor so you water only when needed will help to reduce usage.

What Effect Does a Slow Leak Have?
A slow drip can add up to 15-20 gallons a day. Your water meter is the best detective for finding sizable leaks in your home. Turn everything off carefully, so that no water is being used anywhere in the house. Then check the position of the meter dial for about 15 minutes. If it hasn’t moved, you have a relatively watertight home. But if it has moved, start checking hose connections, faucets, and toilets.
