Sherry K. Powell , CMC
Assistant City Manager/Clerk


Sherry has been with the City of Grant since September of 1997. She was hired as the City Treasurer/Deputy Clerk from August 1997 to April 2005, until being appointed to the City Clerk position in May 2005. Sherry also served as Interim City Manager from May 2005 to August 2005 and again from March 2007 through the end of June 2007, and was appointed to Assistant City Manager/Clerk with the hiring of a new City Manager.  Sherry has been in Grant since 1990.

Sherry has a Degree in Accounting and Computer Information Systems from Baker College. She is currently continuing her education at Baker College and Ferris State University, and is also a 2002 graduate of the Leadership in Newaygo County (LINC) program.  Sherry graduated from the Michigan Association of Municipal Clerks (MAMC) Institute in March 2010, and became a Certified Municipal Clerk on October 6, 2010.  Sherry has always served as the City of Grant's representative to the Grant Area Chamber of Commerce, where she was elected Vice President of the Board of Directors and also served as Frontier Festival Co-Chair in 2009.  She has also served as the City of Grant's representative on the Ashland-Grant Fire Board as well as the Grant Area District Library Board of Trustees.  She also serves on a health education advisory committee for Grant Public Schools.  Sherry's husband, Dan Powell, served nearly a decade as a City Commissioner and most recently served two consecutive terms as the Newaygo County District 7 Commissioner. Dan and Sherry have one son.

Memberships: Michigan Association of Municipal Clerks, Michigan Local Government Managers Association, Michigan Government Finance Officers Association, Newaygo County Clerk's Association, and Michigan Municipal League.

City Clerk Job Duties Include:

  • Administers all Elections for the City of Grant Precinct #1 and the Grant Public School Election Precinct #6
  • Maintains Entire Voter Registration Database and Issuance of New Cards
  • Maintain all official records including Meeting Minutes, Agendas, Ordinances, and Resolutions
  • Maintains all records and database for Parkview Cemetery
  • Currently serves as Ex-officio member of the City Planning Commission
  • Advisory member of the Downtown Development Authority
  • Handles Records Retention for all administrative offices
  • Administers all General Ledger, Accounts Payable, and Payroll
  • Maintains Human Resources records, forms, and reports
  • Assists with Budgeting and manages Budget Amendments
  • Maintains City's Revenues and Disbursements Information utilizing BS&A Fund Accounting Software and Procedures
  • City's Internal Auditor/Oversees Development and Implementation of Accounting Procedures
  • Assists with Zoning Compliance Permits and Economic Development as needed
  • Administers all Oaths of Office 
  • Assists with Maintenance of City Website
  • Provides Crosstraining for Administrative Staff and oversight of student interns
  • Represents the City of Grant on the Grant Area Chamber of Commerce Board, serving as Vice President until September 30, 2009
  • Assists with Numerous Related City functions As Needed
  • Handles Grant Writing and Planning for City Clean-Up/Volunteer Day Events
  • Serves the community as a Notary Public (Never a charge for City residents)
